Fit4Life

The Fit4Life campaign was introduced by the Sandwiches, Salads & Pizza business across its four sites: Solway Foods Manton Wood Worksop, Solway Foods Corby, The Pizza Factory and Gunstones Bakery in January 2008 with the aim to reduce levels of absence, enhance retention rates and also increase productivity. The campaign highlights how employees can help maintain their own health and fitness through regularly reviewing their wellbeing and lifestyle.

The Fit4Life initiatives include:

  • All Sandwiches, Salads and Pizza employees offered a free annual health check and assessment with an Occupational Health adviser.
  • Opportunities to participate in events and activities such as Blood pressure awareness ‘Know your numbers week’, National bike week, Breast Cancer care/awareness month, World sight day, National stress awareness day.
  • All four site canteens offer healthier menu choices such as salad bar and fresh fruit.
  • Running and walking clubs established at Solway Foods Manton Wood which run throughout the year
  • Employees encouraged with free pedometers given at the start of the programme and to adopt alternative methods of transport to work, for example bicycles. Solway Corby invested £5,000 in a bicycle shed due to the number of employees travelling by bicycle.

Example of Excellence

In July 2010, the Fit4Life campaign was awarded an Example of Excellence in the Healthy Workplaces category by Business in the Community.

The Example of Excellence followed the receipt of a Big Tick in June 2010, being the first level of award. The Big Tick is awarded to all entries in a category that achieve a specific national standard. In each category the top national Big Ticks are shortlisted and sent forward for judging to become the overall winner – Example of Excellence.
