With concern in the food industry about a growing skills gap and the need to recruit 2000 new skilled entrants by 2014, Northern Foods has responded by launching a charitable foundation to attract more young talent into the UK's largest manufacturing sector.
The Northern Foods Foundation for Science & Technology sponsors 30 new post A-Level students a year throughout their degree course at three of Britain's top food science establishments - Leeds, Nottingham and Reading universities.
The foundation will initially run for 5 years, offering support to at least 150 students over that time, and raising awareness of opportunities within the food and drink industry.
The students benefit from closer links with Northern Foods through insight days and other events, although there is no requirement for students to take up a career with Northern Foods in the future.
Any successful applicant to a food-science related course at one of the participating universities will be able to apply for one of the £1,000 per year grants that the foundation will administer.
In addition to supporting food science students directly, Northern Foods hopes that its Foundation for Science & Technology will help to:
In the modern food and drink sector a food science degree can lead into a host of career areas, including food manufacturing, environmental health, food microbiology, product development, process technology, food journalism, food-aid coordination, catering or research.
Once you have been accepted to study food science or a related degree at Leeds, Nottingham or Reading, the relevant university will contact you with further information. The sponsorships are available to first year students and are awarded in November of each year.
